Drinker Sai 2024 Movie Review – A Small Bottle, A Massive Heart ❤️

Hey guys! What’s up, you thought 2024 was only about Pushpa 2, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, and Singham Again? Think again. While the whole country was busy with those big-budget monsters, one tiny little film quietly walked in, sat on our chests, and refused to leave.

I’m talking about Drinker Sai 2024 – the movie that made people laugh till their stomachs hurt and cry like babies in the very next scene. No superstar, no item song, no ₹200 crore budget… and still, it feels like the most important film of the year.

I walked into the theatre with zero expectations. Came out with a lump in my throat and a stupid smile that stayed for two days straight. So grab your popcorn (or a cold drink, no judgement), because this is going to be a long, heartfelt, and completely honest review from one movie lover to another.

The Story – Told Without Spoiling a Single Frame

Sai (Rajkummar Rao) is a 30-something guy running his late father’s small liquor shop in Dadar, Mumbai. He opens the shutter at 10 am, sells bottles all day, and by night he’s usually drinking half of his own stock. The entire locality lovingly (and mockingly) calls him “Drinker Sai”.

Life is stuck in an endless loop: open bottle, close bottle, repeat.

Then one random day, something happens that turns his world upside down. What follows is a crazy, funny, heartbreaking journey of guilt, friendship, family, and figuring out whether you can ever really escape your own shadow.

Important: This movie does NOT glorify alcohol. It treats booze like that toxic friend we all have – fun for a night, disastrous if you let him stay forever.

Performances That Blew My Mind

Rajkummar Rao as Drinker Sai Give this man every award already. He gained 14 kilos, lived with real-life alcoholics for months, and nailed the Maharashtrian accent so perfectly that people in Pune thought he was actually from there. There’s a mirror scene in the third act… bro, I was sobbing in INOX like a kid who lost his phone. Pure acting masterclass.

Pankaj Tripathi as Anna He plays the owner of the rival liquor shop. These two hate each other but can’t live without each other. One line from him – “We sell liquor so others can drink… but if we don’t drink, who will?” – the entire hall exploded with claps and laughter.

Abhishek Banerjee as Chhotu Sai’s shop assistant and the funniest character of 2024. His comic timing is sharper than my mom’s kitchen knife. One scene where he’s drunk and giving life advice to Sai had people laughing so hard we missed the next two dialogues!

Seema Pahwa & Vijay Raaz Small roles, massive impact. Every second they’re on screen feels like gold.

Direction, Writing & Technical Brilliance

Vikramaditya Motwane proves once again why he’s one of India’s most underrated filmmakers. The camera feels like it’s drunk with Sai – shaky when he’s wasted, steady when he’s trying to stay sober. Intimate, raw, and beautiful.

Varun Grover’s dialogues hit harder than a neat peg on an empty stomach. Sample this: “People say alcohol helps you forget pain. Truth is… it only reminds you what you were trying to forget.”

Amit Trivedi’s background score + 4 situational songs are pure magic. “Botal Khuli Hai” is currently ruling every Instagram reel (and my playlist).

Cinematography by Avinash Arun Dhaware (the Paatal Lok guy) makes dirty Mumbai lanes look poetic. Neon lights reflecting in whiskey glasses? Chef’s kiss.

What Makes Drinker Sai 2024 So Special?

  • Zero melodrama – everything feels painfully real
  • Black humour done right (you’ll feel guilty for laughing… and then laugh again)
  • Every single character has a proper arc
  • No forced romance or item number
  • That climax twist + emotional payoff – I still get goosebumps thinking about it
  • It respects your intelligence – no spoon-feeding

Any Flaws? (Being Honest)

If I’m being super picky:

  • Second half has a 10–15 minute stretch that feels slightly slow
  • The ending is a bit open-ended (I loved it, but some people might want more closure

Still, these are tiny nitpicks in an otherwise near-perfect film.

My Final Rating: ★★★★½ (4.5 out of 5)

In a year packed with masala blockbusters, Drinker Sai 2024 feels like a warm hug from an old friend who knows all your flaws but loves you anyway.
